The University of Iowa

Iowa Summer Journalism Workshops

Dates:
Monday, July 19, 2021 to Thursday, July 22, 2021

Advanced Graphic Design
Constructed for those looking to take the next step in design using Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and other useful online design tools. You will study modern design, font and color theory as well as design software– all while preparing alternative story forms and multi-spread theme packages. The goal is for each student to return to school with design ideas they can put into place on their publication in the coming school year.

Investigative Reporting
A transformational week working with a professional award-winning investigative journalist. By the end of this hands-on week, you will be ready to produce your own investigative work. This program will help students find the perfect intersection of data, human interest, and public impact.

Personal Writing
Don’t just write. Express yourself and have fun. Editorials are the lifeblood of any publication. Reviews take you into the world of culture and sports. Columns let you put your personality into the story. Here’s your chance to stand out, to find your voice and return to your publication next fall as the writer everyone is talking about.

Photojournalism
In this class we’ll use photography to explore our lives in quarantine, or possibly as we come out of quarantine. Who knows where we’ll be in July? That’s what makes it exciting! The only things you will need for this workshop are a computer that can run Zoom and a cell phone with a camera. That’s right, a cell phone! This summer we’re going to step away from the traditional camera and focus on how to make better images with those little devices we carry around with us everywhere. By the end of this course, you’ll be a more confident photographer and a closer observer of your surroundings.

Publication Leadership Academy
Whether it’s online news, a newspaper or yearbook, editorial leadership starts with you. In addition to media training, participants in this workshop will meet with captains of industry beyond journalism to better understand what it means to lead, accept responsibility, and thrive in real-world environments.
